The word “hypocrite” is derived from the Greek word ὑπόκρισις (hypokrisis), which means “play-acting”, “acting out”, and “coward”. This term was applied to any sort of public performance. Greek actors would use masks to change characters….The term hypokrisis implies a counterfeit persona, which is what gives the modern word hypocrisy its negative connotation.
Every human being is an actor.
We act differently than we feel on the inside. We project what we THINK people will accept because we fear if they see the real us they won’t love us…..because we don’t love who we are either.
Other people can’t see Jesus in me if I’ve got a mask on.
2 Corinthians 4:3-6 “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
People are supposed to be able to look at my face and recognize Jesus in me…not the world.
The sun has it’s own source of light, but the moon can only reflect the light of the sun. Likewise, you & I are supposed to reflect the light of Jesus.
Shame causes me to hide behind a mask. That mask prevents the light of Jesus from being fully reflected in me.
Back to the word “restore”:
To be restored is to be made sound or whole. God makes you at peace with your past & then makes you a sound mind by putting the pieces back together.
The work of the Lord is so effective that it is able to restore you & make you as if you never had been ashamed….never needed to be restored in the first place.
The most critical thing that needs to happen is that the people of God need to be made whole.
