Proverbs 31 Challenge ~ Chapter 4

Proverbs 4

Amplified Bible (AMP)

4 Hear, my sons, the instruction of a father, and pay attention in order to gain and to know intelligent discernment, comprehension, and interpretation [of spiritual matters].

For I give you good doctrine [what is to be received]; do not forsake my teaching.

When I [Solomon] was a son with my father [David], tender and the only son in the sight of my mother [Bathsheba],

He taught me and said to me, Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments and live.

Get skillful and godly Wisdom, get understanding (discernment, comprehension, and interpretation); do not forget and do not turn back from the words of my mouth.

Forsake not [Wisdom], and she will keep, defend, and protect you; love her, and she will guard you.

The beginning of Wisdom is: get Wisdom (skillful and godly Wisdom)! [For skillful and godly Wisdom is the principal thing.] And with all you have gotten, get understanding (discernment, comprehension, and interpretation).

Prize Wisdom highly and exalt her, and she will exalt and promote you; she will bring you to honor when you embrace her.

She shall give to your head a wreath of gracefulness; a crown of beauty and glory will she deliver to you.

10 Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings, and the years of your life shall be many.

11 I have taught you in the way of skillful and godly Wisdom [which is comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God]; I have led you in paths of uprightness.

12 When you walk, your steps shall not be hampered [your path will be clear and open]; and when you run, you shall not stumble.

13 Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; guard her, for she is your life.

14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.

15 Avoid it, do not go on it; turn from it and pass on.

16 For they cannot sleep unless they have caused trouble or vexation; their sleep is taken away unless they have caused someone to fall.

17 For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.

18 But the path of the [uncompromisingly] just and righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines more and more (brighter and clearer) until [it reaches its full strength and glory in] the perfect day [to be prepared].

19 The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.

20 My son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings.

21 Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart.

22 For they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh.

23 Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.

24 Put away from you false and dishonest speech, and willful and contrary talk put far from you.

25 Let your eyes look right on [with fixed purpose], and let your gaze be straight before you.

26 Consider well the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established and ordered aright.

27 Turn not aside to the right hand or to the left; remove your foot from evil.

  1. Day 4: Proverbs 4

    The Path

18 But the path of the [uncompromisingly] just and righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines more and more (brighter and clearer) until [it reaches its full strength and glory in] the perfect day [to be prepared].

Sometimes, my path seems so dark, so uncertain. I can’t see where I am walking or where I am to go. Yet here it is written God’s heart for me. He wants to illuminate my path. He wants me to see the path, to know it. As I read this scripture hope fills my heart. His purpose, His plan is supposed to get brighter and brighter in my life. Just as the sun is at it’s brightest at noon, so is His plan, His timing, His path supposed to be for me. The way I am to live, to think, to speak, is becoming clearer and clearer. So although I may feel like my path is dark, I am trusting Him with it, letting Him lead and He makes my path clear.

    Psalm 18:28 (AMP)

28 For You cause my lamp to be lighted and to shine; the Lord my God illumines my darkness.

In fact, He illuminates the path so much that all the other choices are put in the dark. So it is easy for me to discern. Just as earthly life is orientated around the sun, so my life is to orientated around Jesus, who is my light (John 8:12). Jesus, Who’s death makes it possible for me to be uncompromisingly just and righteous and Who has been unto me wisdom(1 Corinthians 1:30)…..the same wisdom who’s highways lead to life. I so love how God works. He takes care of all the details.

***Thank you, Lord for encouraging my heart about the path you set before me. Also for helping me stay on your path.

    1. Jenni: I love “So, although I may feel like my path is dark, I am trusting Him with it, letting Him lead and He makes my path clear.” EXACTLY!! You expressed my thought’s so perfectly! Thank you, my friend, for this!

  2. This chapter opens with a father’s tenderhearted instruction to his son. You could almost imagine Solomon reminiscing in his mind of His father King David. Most of this chapter is autobiographical of King Solomon upbringing. “Get wisdom”[v:5], he speaks of it like a young lady being courted. “Get understanding”, it’s the combination to seal the deal…marriage. Of course I speak in metaphors but only to make you see that it is a blessed union [like a marriage] of the mind, spirit and body. The next verses reads like a love poem: “Don’t forsake wisdom, and she will protect you: love her, and she will watch over you.[v:6]…Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.” [v:8] She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor”[v:9] Now, I ask you, what man [reverse the role for a woman] would not like be greeted like that every day?? But why do we not show the same enthusiasm to wisdom and understanding – to seek it out like cool water on a hot night???

There are more attributes to be gained by adhering to God’s instructions for us as believers. It is a wellspring of life the word says. [v:23] Your words and actions will be good. You will desire to practice what you learn. You can have confidence that the Lord is leading and guiding you by His spirit within your heart, for that is where you are told to keep wisdom.[v:21]

God delights in a heart that seeks after His wisdom. He says the path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn. [v:18] I love that time of morning, don’t you? The morning rays that beam through the clouds in the sky…it’s like getting a kiss on the forehead by our Heavenly Father as we scoot out the door to begin our day! And it continues!!! “Shining ever brighter till the full light of day”!!! His wisdom will guide us to stay in the Light of Jesus. Think about that!

When we understand why we need to be wiser than a fool, we will no longer desire to play a fools game or to be played like a fool by Satan. God gives us the wisdom to discern the characteristic of evil, darkness, corrupt talk, perversity and wickedness in high places. He gives us understanding to trust our instincts that tell us to run like the wind in the opposite direction of evil men.

This is knowledge. Unfortunately, sometime is will come by the way of the “school of hard knocks” but all is not lost my friend, for that is where Grace shines it’s brightest!

    My prayer:

    Father God,
Illuminate your Word to us through the Holy Spirit that we might see more the value of wisdom above that of our own intellect. Soften our hearts and make them tender towards your understand that we may not stumble in darkness but walk boldly with confidence in your path for our life. Amen.

    God Bless ~Zoey

    1. Zoey: “Soften our hearts and make them tender towards your understanding..” What a beautiful and timely prayer. Thank you, my friend, for this prayer. I love it!

  3. Proverbs 4:

I have found so much comfort and encouragement in this 4th chapter of Proverbs. The LORD is giving us reminders of how we are to “walk our path,” and what I have found the most encouraging is the verse:

    (18) “But the path of the [uncompromisingly] just and righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines more and more (brighter and clearer) until [it reaches its full strength and glory in] the perfect day [to be prepared].”

This verse reminds me of my walk with Jesus. I may stumble and fall, but I do not stay down for long. I have learned to reach my hand Up and allow Jesus to help me to my feet. When I brush myself off, I can once again begin my walk, progressing every step toward the “perfect day.”

    1. We picked the same verse. I love it that God is aligning our hearts with the same verse. I see your progress as you walk on His path and my heart is greatly encouraged. I am so very blessed to share this path with you. ❤

      1. Jenni: A cord with 3 strands, each strand similar at the composition, but born of a different process. Much stronger and resilient than a single cord. Able to withstand much more. When one weakens, another carries the weight. Just like us! All the ladies on TT blend together to make this rich tapestry we are weaving. I (almost) cannot wait to view it from the heavens!

      2. Nicolette: Well said!! It is filled with God’s unfailing love, patience, understanding! You keep us in “stitches” and I love you so much for your sense of humor! ~Zoey
