ENVY: noun \ˈen-vē\
: the feeling of wanting to have what someone else has
So, Now that we know the definition, according to the dictionary, let’s look at what the Bible has to say about it.
I’m using my study Bible, “The Everyday Life Bible” with Amplified Old and New Testaments, and notes and commentary by Joyce Meyer.
“Love endures long and is patient and kind; love is never ENVIOUS nor boils over with JEALOUSY, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.” ~I Corinthians 13:4
“For you are still [unspiritual, having the nature] of the flesh [under the control of ordinary impulses]. For as long as [there are] ENVYING AND JEALOUSY and wrangling and factions among you, are you not unspiritual and of the flesh, behaving yourselves after a human standard and liken mere [unchanged] men? ~I Corinthians 3:3
Emotions like envy and jealousy are tough to combat in our lives. They can lead to a spiral of false thoughts, feelings of loneliness and despair. These FEELINGS and EMOTIONS can ruin our self esteem, isolate us from our loved ones, change our future, and diminish our faith in the Lord.
It is vitally important we recognize these thoughts , feelings, and emotions as a battle for our heart and soul as soon as we start to have them. It is simply a case of the warfare of our flesh VS our faith. Sometimes, it is very easy to let our flesh win. It is easier to think that “So and So has it easier/better/greater than we do” than look ABOVE that-THROUGH that-> web of deceit to the TRUTH in Christ Jesus.
God never intended us to wallow in the trenches of misery and gloom, weighed down by unrighteous thoughts of envy and jealousy> which lead to loneliness and despair. He wants us to “Walk in Faith” not by Sight, nor Feelings, nor Emotions.
God told us in the Old Testament, He has a plan for us:
“For I know the thoughts and plans I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.” ~Jeremiah 29:11
God told us right then, and in the following verses, that we must have hope and faith in Him, seek Him with ALL of our hearts and minds (clean thoughts, pure minds-not minds filled with ENVIOUS THOUGHTS AND JEALOUS FEELINGS).
Apostle Paul teaches us to pray with Thanksgiving, no matter what we are currently experiencing in our lives:
“Do not fret or have anxiety (These are FEELINGS-Like ENVY AND JEALOUSY) about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. (7) And God’s peace [shall be yours, and that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so far nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends ALL understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (8) For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, THINK ON and WEIGHT and TAKE ACCOUNT OF THESE THINGS [FIX YOUR MIND ON THEM]. ~Philippians 4:6-8
My friends, I hope you have learned, as I have, that feelings are fleeting, but faith in Christ Jesus is FOREVER. You can either CHOOSE (yes, it is a CHOICE) to waste time wallowing in the depth’s of misery, thinking thoughts of ENVY AND JEALOUSY, or turn your mind to the TRUTH, the WORD, the LIGHT which is CHRIST JESUS!!!
